“To Breathe or Not To Breathe – that is the question”

This summer we now face a new challenge – the smoke from the Canadian wildfires. We receive frequent questions about the safety of children being outdoors when the AQI (air quality index) is elevated. Unfortunately, we don’t always have the answer. From a pure health standpoint, and AQI of 101 or higher should be considered unsafe for outdoor activities. However, there are always other factors that come into play, such as the importance of the activity, length of exposure and underlying health issues.

Screenshot explaining Air Quality Index (AQI) basics, showing a color-coded scale from 0 to 301+ (green to maroon) and describing pollutant types measured, like particulate matter, NO2, O3, CO, and SO2.

When in doubt, would try to minimize exposure.
