The current outbreak of measles in Texas and New Mexico is an example of how quickly this virus can spread. Currently there are 146 cases with 20 patients hospitalized and 1 death in a child. This is the first time in 15 years that there has been a death from measles in the United States. It is a tragedy that a child has died from a preventable infection.
Measles is one of, if not the most, contagious virus that we know of. 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people who come in contact with this virus will become infected. For every case of measles, 12-18 people will be infected. One dose of the vaccine is 93% effective and two doses increase that to 97%. We have received a number inquiries about the need for extra doses of the vaccine given this outbreak and the fact that there are cases in NY city and NJ at present. Under most circumstances 2 doses of the vaccine are effective for life long immunity.
An article in the Washington Post by Dr. Leana Wen provides an excellent summary and addresses these questions.
